Expert tips for food and wine pairings this summer

One of the wine suppliers we use here at Mannings is our friendly neighbourhood wine aficionados, Old Chapel Cellars. Based just a short stroll away on St Clements Street, Old Chapel are one of the top Indie wine merchants in the UK, and we’re thrilled to have a direct line to them when it comes to seasonal updates to our wine list.

Louisa Fitzpatrick of Old Chapel Cellars

Old Chapel Co-Owner Louisa Fitzpatrick has put together some recommendations for summer wines to try, which we’ve paired with the perfect dish from our eclectic menus. Step this way for some mouth-watering summer food and wine ideas!

Bubbles to begin…

Louisa says: “Here at Old Chapel, we’re big fans of Crémant de Loire Brut, from Domaine de Landreau. With a complex biscuity, nutty flavour profile and lovely hints of brioche and voluminous fruit, this is a great alternative to Champagne if you’re in the mood for celebrating! Perfect for date nights at Mannings…”

Try it with… Although this is the perfect aperitif – perhaps with a bowl of olives as you peruse the menu – this Crémant de Loire is also our recommendation with our famous Fish Goujons. After all, bubbles are the best match for Fish & Chips!

Bubbles and batter – a heavenly combo!

White

Louisa says: “A very versatile, food-friendly wine, Mont Rocher’s Viognier is made from grapes grown on old vines, adding complexity and nuance. Beautifully balanced, it’s rich yet briskly refreshing. With honeysuckle and stone fruits, this gorgeous Viognier is a good match for spicy food and Asian flavours.”

Try it with… Our Thai Chicken Curry is a real summer favourite here at Mannings, and this Viognier accentuates the flavours beautifully.

Here at Mannings our Thai curries are legendary…

Or

Louisa says: “Palacio del Camino Real Rioja Blanco is a dangerously drinkable white Rioja, with enticing citrus notes, pear, honeydew melon and a subtle hint of vanilla from its brief time in oak. Again, a brilliantly food-friendly wine which can stand up to quite strong flavours.”

Try it with… Either our Creamy Seafood Casserole or Cornish Chicken – Two Ways. This is a really versatile food wine with qualities similar to a good Chardonnay, so richer, classic dishes are the way to go.

Our white Rioja goes well with some of the classic dishes on the menu

Red

Louisa says: “Fans of Mannings superb steaks and sizzling platters would be mad not to opt for Little Eden Shiraz Cabernet from Australia. With lovely soft tannins, ripe fruit and hints of pepper and mint on the finish, this is seductively good.”

Try it with… A Steak & Stilton Sizzling Platter is a match made in heaven! However, this is also our go-to recommendation for chef’s delicious Confit Pork Belly, served with creamy mash and braised red cabbage. Divine!

A Mannings Sizzler is hard to resist…
